US-FAA14 CFR 91.141

Flight restrictions in the proximity of the Presidential and other parties

Read the official rule

When the President, Vice President, or other public figures travel, the FAA establishes temporary flight restrictions (TFRs) in those areas. This regulation prohibits you from flying in or near these protected areas contrary to the restrictions published in NOTAMs.

In practice, this means you must check NOTAMs before every flight to identify any presidential or VIP TFRs along your route. These restrictions typically create circular areas of prohibited or restricted airspace that move with the protected person's location. Violating a presidential TFR is taken extremely seriously and can result in interception by military aircraft, certificate action, and potential criminal penalties.

The specific boundaries, altitudes, and requirements of each TFR vary and are detailed in the NOTAM. Some TFRs have multiple rings with different restrictions—an inner no-fly zone and an outer area requiring specific procedures or clearances. Always review current NOTAMs during preflight planning and remain aware that new TFRs can be issued on short notice.
