US-FAA14 CFR 91.161

Special awareness training required for pilots flying under visual flight rules within a 60-nautical mile radius of the Washington, DC VOR/DME

Read the official rule

If you plan to fly VFR within 60 nautical miles of the Washington, DC VOR/DME (DCA), you must complete Special Awareness Training and carry proof of completion. This applies whether you're pilot in command or second in command.

The training is free online through the FAA website and covers procedures for flying near Washington, DC and other special use airspace. After completing it, you print a certificate that you must be able to show to FAA inspectors, NTSB representatives, law enforcement officers, or TSA officials upon request.

You're exempt from this requirement if you're flying for an air ambulance operator (Part 135), the military, or law enforcement. The requirement is also waived if you declare an emergency or experience two-way radio failure under IFR.

This regulation exists because of the heightened security concerns around the nation's capital and helps ensure pilots understand the complex airspace restrictions in that area.
