US-FAA14 CFR 91.1617

Special Federal Aviation Regulation No. 117—Prohibition Against Certain Flights in the Tehran Flight Information Region (FIR) (OIIX)

Read the official rule

This regulation prohibits most flights in the Tehran Flight Information Region (FIR) airspace. It applies to U.S. air carriers, commercial operators, anyone exercising FAA pilot certificate privileges (unless flying U.S.-registered aircraft for a foreign carrier), and operators of U.S.-registered aircraft (unless they're foreign carriers).

You cannot fly in this airspace unless you're operating under a U.S. government contract or have received FAA approval or exemption. The FAA prioritizes approvals for U.S. government-sponsored operations first, foreign government operations with U.S. support second, and other operations third.

In emergencies requiring immediate action for flight safety, pilots may deviate as necessary. Most operators (except Part 119/121/125/135 carriers) must submit a deviation report to their Flight Standards Office within 10 days, excluding weekends and federal holidays.

This prohibition remains effective until October 31, 2027, unless the FAA modifies or extends it.
