The Pilots Desk
US-FAA14 CFR 91.1701

Applicability

Read the official rule

This regulation establishes who must follow the special MU-2B training requirements found in Subpart N. Since November 7, 2016, anyone flying a Mitsubishi MU-2B airplane must complete an FAA-approved MU-2B-specific training program that meets these standards.

The rule applies to three groups of people:

  • Pilots in command of MU-2B aircraft
  • Second-in-command pilots in MU-2B aircraft
  • Anyone manipulating the controls under a pilot in command's supervision
  • Flight instructors who provide MU-2B training

These MU-2B requirements are mandatory and come in addition to the normal training requirements found in Parts 61, 91, and 135. In practical terms, you cannot legally fly an MU-2B based solely on your standard pilot certificates and ratings—you must also complete this airplane-specific training program. This special requirement exists because the MU-2B has unique handling characteristics that require focused training beyond typical multi-engine instruction.
