US-FAA14 CFR 91.1703

Compliance and eligibility

Read the official rule

This regulation establishes who can fly the Mitsubishi MU-2B and what training they need. Generally, anyone manipulating controls, acting as PIC, second-in-command, or providing instruction must meet this subpart's requirements. However, someone without these qualifications may fly the aircraft if a qualified PIC is present, no passengers or cargo are aboard, and the flight is for training, maintenance testing, or safety pilot duties.

The regulation defines three training tracks based on experience:

  • Initial/transition training is required if you have less than 50 hours MU-2B PIC time in the past 24 months OR less than 500 total MU-2B PIC hours
  • Requalification training is available if you meet those 50/500-hour thresholds
  • Recurrent training is required every 12 months (though completing Initial/transition or Requalification satisfies this for that year)

Additional Differences training is required when operating multiple MU-2B models.
