Survival equipment for overwater operations

Read the official rule

This regulation establishes survival equipment requirements for overwater flights based on distance from shore. "Shore" means land above the high water mark, excluding areas that flood intermittently.

For flights more than 50 nautical miles from shore: You must carry a life preserver or approved flotation device for each person aboard.

For flights more than 30 minutes flying time OR 100 nautical miles from shore (whichever is less): You need significantly more equipment:

  • Life preservers with survivor locator lights for each occupant
  • Sufficient liferafts with locator lights to hold everyone
  • At least one pyrotechnic signaling device per raft
  • A portable emergency radio that floats, resists water, and works independently of aircraft power
  • A lifeline meeting specific standards
  • A survival kit attached to each raft

All equipment must be easily accessible and in clearly marked locations for quick access during ditching. Fractional ownership programs may request deviations from some requirements.
