US-FAA14 CFR 91.601

Applicability

Read the official rule

This regulation defines which aircraft must follow the rules in Subpart G of Part 91. It applies specifically to large aircraft (more than 12,500 pounds maximum certificated takeoff weight) and transport category aircraft that are registered in the United States and operated as civil aircraft.

In practical terms, if you're flying a smaller aircraft—like most single-engine planes, light twins, or even many business jets under 12,500 pounds—this subpart doesn't apply to you. However, if you operate or fly larger aircraft such as airliners, heavy business jets, or large cargo planes, you must comply with the additional operational requirements found in this subpart. These requirements cover areas like crew qualifications, operational procedures, and equipment standards that are more stringent than those for smaller aircraft.

This matters because it determines whether you need to follow the enhanced rules designed for larger, more complex aircraft operations.
