Every pilot eventually faces an unexpected change of plans. Whether due to deteriorating weather, mechanical issues, or simply poor navigation, knowing how to execute a proper diversion or lost procedure can mean the difference between a minor inconvenience and a serious emergency. These skills form the foundation of aeronautical decision-making and should be practiced regularly, not just during checkrides.
Understanding Diversions
A diversion occurs when you intentionally change your destination airport during flight. Unlike getting lost, a diversion is a deliberate decision made while you still have situational awareness and control of the situation. Common reasons include unexpected weather at your destination, passenger medical issues, fuel concerns, or mechanical problems that don't require immediate landing but warrant getting on the ground sooner than planned.
The key to successful diversions is early decision-making. Pilots often wait too long, hoping conditions will improve or problems will resolve themselves. This delay reduces your options and increases stress. When you first suspect you might need to divert, begin evaluating alternate airports immediately. Consider factors like distance, runway length, available services, weather conditions, and your fuel reserves.
Executing a Diversion
Start by maintaining aircraft control and your current heading—don't immediately turn toward an alternate until you've made a plan. Identify suitable airports using your sectional chart, GPS, or ForeFlight. Select an airport that meets your needs with adequate safety margins. A good technique is to choose an airport roughly 90 degrees off your current course when possible, as this makes pilotage easier and provides a clear mental picture.
Calculate a heading to your alternate. For VFR diversions, a rough heading is usually sufficient—you can refine it once established. Estimate time and distance using the "rule of 60" or your flight computer. Most importantly, calculate whether you have adequate fuel reserves. Always plan to land with more than the legal minimum; weather diversions often involve headwinds or longer routes than anticipated.
Communicate your intentions. If you're VFR, contact Flight Service or the nearest ATC facility to update your flight plan or close and open a new one. If you're IFR, notify ATC of your intention to divert—they'll provide vectors and handle the coordination. Don't let pride prevent you from declaring an emergency if the situation warrants it; this gives you priority handling and additional resources.
The Lost Procedure: When You Don't Know Where You Are
Getting lost is different from diverting—it means you've genuinely lost situational awareness of your position. The traditional "Five C's" provide a systematic approach: Climb, Communicate, Confess, Comply, and Conserve.
Climb to improve radio and navigation reception and give yourself more gliding distance if you have an engine failure. Higher altitude also provides better visibility for identifying landmarks. Communicate by contacting any ATC facility on the last assigned frequency, 121.5 (emergency), or even nearby tower frequencies. Confess your situation honestly—controllers can't help if they don't understand the problem. Comply with all instructions from ATC. Conserve fuel by reducing power to maximum endurance settings and avoiding unnecessary maneuvering.
Common Mistakes and Better Techniques
The most dangerous mistake is continuing blindly, hoping to stumble upon your destination. This "press-on-itis" burns fuel and increases stress. Another error is making multiple heading changes without a clear plan, which only confuses your position further.
Many pilots also fail to use all available resources. Your GPS, even a handheld or phone app, can instantly resolve position uncertainty. VOR stations provide excellent backup navigation—identify the station, determine your radial, and cross-reference with another VOR or landmark. Don't overlook pilotage: water towers, highways, and railroad tracks are marked on sectional charts and highly visible from the air.
Practice these procedures during training flights in good weather. Deliberately divert to a nearby airport, calculating heading and fuel in flight. Have your instructor cover your GPS and practice identifying your position using only VOR and pilotage. This builds the muscle memory and confidence you'll need when the situation is real.
Prevention Through Planning
The best diversion is the one you don't need. Thorough preflight planning, including identification of alternate airports along your route, reduces surprises. Monitor weather continuously and maintain situational awareness throughout the flight. Keep track of checkpoints and times—if you're not where you expected to be when you expected to be there, investigate immediately rather than hoping you'll recognize the next landmark.
Remember that both diversions and lost procedures are normal parts of flying. They're not failures—they're professional responses to changing conditions. The key is recognizing the situation early and taking systematic, deliberate action.
