Unlike ground emergencies where you can evacuate immediately, an airborne fire requires quick thinking, decisive action, and proper prioritization. Understanding the different types of fires, recognition signs, and immediate action items can mean the difference between a successful emergency landing and a catastrophic outcome.
Recognition and Initial Response
The first indication of fire or smoke is often your sense of smell—an acrid, electrical odor or visible smoke in the cockpit. Some pilots make the critical mistake of spending too much time investigating the source before taking action. Your immediate priority is simple: aviate, identify the emergency, and prepare to land as soon as conditions permit.
Electrical fires typically produce a distinct burning plastic smell and may be accompanied by flickering instruments or complete electrical failures. Engine fires in single-engine aircraft often present with smoke entering through the cabin heat vents, oil streaks on the windscreen, or unusual engine indications. In twins, asymmetric thrust and visible flames from the cowling may be evident.
The moment you suspect fire or smoke, announce your emergency to ATC. Use clear, concise language: "Mayday, Mayday, Mayday, [callsign], in-flight fire, requesting immediate landing [location]." ATC can provide vectors to the nearest suitable airport and alert emergency services—don't delay this call while troubleshooting.
Electrical Fire Procedures
For suspected electrical fires, the standard procedure involves systematically eliminating the power source. Turn off the master switch (or battery and alternator separately) to remove electrical power from the system. This action alone often stops an electrical fire from progressing.
Many pilots hesitate to shut down all electrical power, worried about losing navigation and communication. This is a dangerous mindset. Your life depends on stopping the fire, not maintaining radio contact. If conditions permit and the fire appears extinguished, you can selectively restore electrical power one circuit at a time, starting with essential equipment. If smoke returns, immediately shut down that circuit.
Use your fire extinguisher if flames are visible, but recognize its limitations—most handheld extinguishers provide only 8-12 seconds of discharge. Aim at the base of flames, not the smoke. After discharge, the fire may reignite if the heat source remains active, which is why removing electrical power is crucial.
Engine Fire Management
Engine fires require different procedures depending on your aircraft type. In single-engine aircraft, the immediate action is often to shut down the engine (mixture to idle cutoff, fuel selector off, throttle closed) and establish best glide speed. This removes the fuel source and may reduce airflow that fans the flames.
A common error is attempting to restart an engine that's experienced a fire. Unless you've confirmed the fire is completely extinguished and identified a correctable cause (such as a flooded engine on startup), restarting risks reigniting the fire with potentially worse consequences.
For cabin heat-related smoke (where engine combustion byproducts enter the cabin), immediately close the cabin heat valve and open fresh air vents. This isn't technically a fire, but the smoke can be incapacitating. Many pilots fail to recognize this scenario and shut down a perfectly functioning engine unnecessarily.
Smoke Management and Visibility
Smoke inhalation poses an immediate threat to your ability to control the aircraft. Open fresh air vents and consider opening a window if your aircraft design permits (check your POH—some aircraft experience controllability issues with windows open at certain speeds). Increasing ventilation helps clear smoke but may also fan flames, so monitor the situation carefully.
If smoke obscures your vision, don't hesitate to declare an emergency and request vectors or ASR (Airport Surveillance Radar) approach assistance. Fly by instruments if necessary, and consider a no-flap landing if you cannot see to configure the aircraft normally. The goal is getting on the ground quickly, not executing a perfect approach.
Landing Considerations
Once the immediate fire is controlled or suppressed, your priority shifts to landing at the nearest suitable airport—not your planned destination, not the airport with maintenance facilities, but the nearest runway where you can safely land. Altitude is your enemy in a fire situation; every minute airborne allows the fire to potentially spread or reignite.
Plan for a straight-in approach when possible, minimizing maneuvering and time in the air. Brief passengers on emergency egress procedures during your approach, and be prepared to evacuate immediately after landing. Position the aircraft to allow escape from upwind of any fire, and shut down all systems once clear of the runway.
