Soft-Field Takeoffs and Landings
How to operate on grass, dirt or snow without nosing over or getting stuck.
Soft-field technique is for unpaved or contaminated surfaces — grass, dirt, sand, snow — where the goal is to keep weight off the nosewheel and get airborne (or stay rolling) before the soft surface traps you.
Soft-field takeoff
- Keep moving — don't stop on the soft surface; taxi with back-pressure to keep the nosewheel light.
- Apply flaps per the POH, hold full aft elevator, and add power smoothly while rolling.
- Let the aircraft lift off as early as possible at a low speed, then stay in ground effect to accelerate to a safe climb speed before climbing away.
Soft-field landing
- Fly a normal stabilized approach.
- Touch down as softly and slowly as possible, holding the nosewheel off with aft elevator.
- Keep the nosewheel off the ground as long as control allows, then lower it gently and keep aft pressure during rollout.
- Avoid braking — the soft surface provides plenty of deceleration and braking can nose you over.
Common pitfalls
- Climbing out of ground effect too early and settling back.
- Letting the nosewheel drop early into soft ground.
