The Circle-to-Land Approach

Circling approaches require visual maneuvering within protected airspace after completing an instrument approach, demanding careful speed control, position awareness, and willingness to execute a missed approach when the maneuver becomes unstable.

The Circle-to-Land Approach

When the final approach course of an instrument approach doesn't align well with the landing runway, or when the descent gradient is too steep for a straight-in landing, pilots use a circling approach to maneuver visually to the runway. This procedure bridges the gap between instrument and visual flight, requiring careful planning and precise execution.

Understanding Circling Approaches

A circling approach allows you to fly an instrument approach to one runway, then maneuver visually to land on another. The FAA authorizes circling when the final approach course alignment exceeds 30 degrees from the landing runway, or when a normal descent rate from the minimum descent altitude (MDA) to the runway cannot be achieved.

The approach plate will indicate circling minimums separately from straight-in minimums, and these are almost always higher. Circling minimums provide obstacle clearance within a protected area that expands based on your approach category. Category A aircraft have the smallest protected area (1.3 nautical miles radius), while faster categories require increasingly larger areas—up to 4.5 miles for Category E.

Your approach category is determined by 1.3 times your stall speed in landing configuration, or your maximum certificated landing weight. Most single-engine trainers fall into Category A, while light twins typically operate in Category B. This matters significantly because using the wrong category can place you outside protected airspace.

The Protected Airspace Concept

The circling approach protected area is not a simple circle around the airport. It consists of arcs drawn from the threshold of each runway, creating an irregular shape that accounts for all usable runways. Understanding this geometry is crucial because obstacle clearance is only guaranteed within these boundaries.

Once you descend below the MDA, you must remain within this protected area while maneuvering to land. The FAA provides 300 feet of obstacle clearance in this zone, but only if you stay inside it. Drifting outside—particularly common when circling in strong winds—can place you dangerously close to obstacles.

The protected area assumes you maintain your approach category speed until beginning the final descent to the runway. If you fly faster than your category allows, you need more room to turn and may inadvertently exit protected airspace. This is why maintaining proper speed discipline is essential throughout the maneuver.

Executing the Circle-to-Land

The key to a successful circling approach is arriving at the MDA with the runway environment clearly in sight and enough distance remaining to maneuver comfortably. Plan your circle to remain close enough to the airport that you could make an emergency landing if your engine failed, yet far enough out to avoid steep banks and rushed maneuvering.

Most pilots find that remaining roughly 30 degrees or less off the extended runway centerline during the circle provides the best balance. Avoid the temptation to circle too wide, as this increases your chances of losing visual contact with the airport or drifting outside protected airspace, especially at night or in marginal visibility.

Maintain MDA until positioned to execute a normal descent to landing. The regulation requires you to keep the airport in sight throughout the maneuver—if you lose visual contact, you must execute the missed approach immediately. This is non-negotiable, even if you think you can quickly reacquire the runway.

Bank angles during circling should not exceed 30 degrees, as steeper banks increase stall speed and reduce your ability to maintain obstacle clearance. In gusty or crosswind conditions, consider using the next higher approach category minimums to provide additional protected airspace and maneuvering room.

Common Mistakes and Risk Management

The most dangerous mistake is descending below MDA before you're in position for a normal landing. Pilots sometimes get fixated on "getting down" and sacrifice their obstacle clearance buffer. Remember: MDA is a hard floor until you can make a normal descent to the runway.

Another frequent error is poor wind drift correction. Strong winds can push you outside the protected area faster than you realize, especially during turns. Continuously monitor your position relative to the airport and be prepared to tighten or widen your circle as needed.

Many accidents occur when pilots attempt to salvage a poorly planned circle with aggressive maneuvering at low altitude. If your circle isn't working out, execute the missed approach. The missed approach procedure for a circling approach requires you to make the initial climbing turn toward the landing runway, then proceed to the missed approach holding fix.

Finally, never attempt a circling approach in conditions worse than you're comfortable handling. Legal minimums aren't always safe minimums for every pilot. Consider your experience level, currency, and the specific environmental factors before committing to circle.
