The FAA Knowledge (Written) Test

What's on the FAA written test, how to prepare, and where it fits in earning your certificate.

What it is

The knowledge test is a computer-based, multiple-choice exam (for example 60 questions for the private, 70% to pass) covering regulations, weather, aerodynamics, navigation, performance and aeromedical factors.

Getting ready

  • Use a reputable ground school or app (King, Sporty's, Gleim, Sheppard, etc.).
  • Get the required instructor endorsement before you test.
  • Take it at an approved testing center (PSI); bring a photo ID and your endorsement.

Strategy

Pass it early in training so the knowledge supports your flying — and you don't waste flight hours on ground gaps. Keep your results: the examiner will revisit any weak areas at the checkride.

General, US-focused guidance for reference and training only — confirm current requirements with the FAA or your local civil aviation authority before relying on it. Last reviewed June 2, 2026.
