Becoming a Flight Instructor (CFI)
Teach, build hours and deepen your knowledge — the path to the Certificated Flight Instructor certificate.
Why instructors do it
Instructing is the classic way to build the hours needed for an airline career while getting paid — and teaching makes you a sharper, more knowledgeable pilot.
Requirements
- Hold a commercial (or ATP) certificate in the category/class you'll teach.
- Pass two knowledge tests: Fundamentals of Instructing (FOI) and the CFI knowledge test.
- Pass a demanding CFI practical test, teaching maneuvers from the right seat and demonstrating the fundamentals of instructing.
Add-ons
Add a CFII (instrument instructor) and MEI (multi-engine instructor) to teach more and log more varied time.
