The Student Pilot's Guide to Getting Started
Your first steps as a student pilot: the certificate, solo, endorsements and what to expect.
Getting your student pilot certificate
Apply through the FAA's IACRA system (your instructor will help); the plastic certificate arrives by mail. You need it before your first solo.
Before you solo
Your instructor must endorse your logbook and student certificate for solo after you've shown the required knowledge and skills — and you'll pass a pre-solo written quiz.
What training looks like
Lessons mix ground briefings and flying — the basics, slow flight and stalls, takeoffs and landings, emergencies — then solo, cross-countries, night and test prep.
Stay organized
Keep a tidy logbook, track your endorsements, study a little every day, and communicate openly with your instructor. Consistency is everything.
