The Checkride: Passing Your Practical Test
What to expect on the FAA practical test — the oral exam and the flight test — and how to prepare.
What it is
The checkride is your practical test with a Designated Pilot Examiner (DPE), conducted to the Airman Certification Standards (ACS). It has two parts: an oral exam and a flight test.
The oral
Expect questions on regulations, weather, aircraft systems, performance, aeromedical factors and cross-country planning — including a cross-country the examiner assigns you to plan.
The flight
Fly the maneuvers and procedures in the ACS to the specified tolerances (altitudes, headings, airspeeds), demonstrating sound judgment and aeronautical decision-making.
Preparation
- Know the ACS cold — it is the blueprint for the test.
- Have your aircraft documents, logbook endorsements and currency in order.
- Fly a mock checkride with your instructor. Calm and methodical beats fast.
