Definitions

This regulation defines key terms used throughout Part 107, which governs small unmanned aircraft (drone) operations.

Control station is whatever interface you use to fly the drone—typically a controller or tablet. Small unmanned aircraft means any drone under 55 pounds at takeoff, including everything attached. Small UAS refers to the complete system: the aircraft plus all components needed to operate it safely, like communication links and controllers.

Unmanned aircraft means any aircraft flown without a person physically inside controlling it. A visual observer is someone you designate to help watch for traffic and obstacles while you fly.

Corrective lenses simply means glasses or contacts, relevant when vision requirements apply. A declaration of compliance is documentation you submit to the FAA certifying your drone meets Category 2 or 3 operational standards.

These definitions establish the regulatory framework for all Part 107 operations and override conflicting definitions elsewhere in FAA regulations.
