Visual observer

When you use a visual observer (VO) during drone operations, three main requirements apply:

Communication and coordination are mandatory. The remote pilot in command, the person flying the drone, and the visual observer must maintain effective communication throughout the flight. This means everyone stays in contact—whether by radio, phone, or direct conversation—so they can share information in real time.

The VO must maintain visual line of sight. The remote pilot in command is responsible for ensuring the visual observer can see the drone with unaided vision (except for corrective lenses), just as required in § 107.31.

Everyone works together on safety. All parties must coordinate to scan for potential collision hazards and maintain awareness of the drone's position through direct visual observation. This teamwork approach helps ensure someone always has eyes on the aircraft and the surrounding airspace, enhancing safety when the remote pilot's view might be limited by distance, obstacles, or attention to controls.
