Flight restrictions in the proximity of certain areas designated by notice to airmen

This regulation requires drone pilots operating under Part 107 to follow the same airspace restrictions that apply to manned aircraft in certain sensitive or hazardous areas. These include:

  • Temporary flight restrictions (TFRs) around disaster areas, emergency operations, or VIP movements
  • Restrictions near aerial demonstrations and major sporting events
  • Special security instructions for Washington, D.C. and other sensitive locations
  • Air Defense Identification Zone (ADIZ) requirements

In practical terms, you must check NOTAMs before every flight to identify any active restrictions in your operating area. Flying in these restricted zones without authorization can result in serious penalties, including certificate action and potential criminal charges. The FAA publishes TFRs through the NOTAM system and the FAA website's TFR map. Even if your planned flight area is normally unrestricted, temporary restrictions can appear with little notice, making pre-flight planning essential.
