Issuance of a remote pilot certificate with a small UAS rating

This regulation outlines how to apply for a remote pilot certificate (drone license). You must submit your application in a form acceptable to the FAA, and you have two pathways:

Option 1: Pass the initial aeronautical knowledge test at an approved testing center and include your test results with your application.

Option 2: If you already hold a pilot certificate (except student pilot) and have a current flight review, you can complete an FAA-approved online training course covering the required knowledge areas instead of taking the knowledge test.

For Option 2, you must submit your application to a Flight Standards office, designated pilot examiner, flight instructor, or other authorized person who will verify your identity. You'll also need to provide proof of your current flight review through a logbook endorsement or other acceptable documentation.

This regulation essentially gives existing pilots a streamlined path to drone certification while requiring non-pilots to pass the standard knowledge test.
