Temporary certificate

When you pass the remote pilot knowledge test, the FAA issues you a temporary remote pilot certificate that's valid for up to 120 calendar days. This temporary certificate allows you to legally operate small drones while the FAA processes your permanent certificate.

Your temporary certificate stops being valid when any of these happens first:

  • The expiration date printed on the certificate arrives
  • You receive your permanent certificate in the mail
  • The FAA notifies you that your application has been denied or your certificate is revoked

In practice, this means you can start flying commercially as soon as you receive your temporary certificate—you don't need to wait for the permanent one. Just make sure to carry the temporary certificate with you during operations, and be aware of its expiration date in case there are processing delays with your permanent certificate.
