Flight duty period: Augmented flightcrew
Read the official ruleThis regulation sets maximum flight duty period limits for augmented flightcrew operations (where extra pilots are carried to allow in-flight rest). The specific time limits are found in Table C of Part 117.
If a pilot is not acclimated to the local time zone, the maximum flight duty period is reduced by 30 minutes, and limits are based on the time zone where they were last acclimated.
The regulation requires specific rest opportunities during flight:
- The pilot who will fly the landing must have two consecutive hours available for rest during the second half of the duty period
- The pilot who will monitor the landing must have 90 consecutive minutes available for rest
No more than three flight segments are permitted under augmented operations. Throughout the flight, at least one pilot qualified under §121.543(b)(3)(i) must always be at the controls. Both the certificate holder and flightcrew members are responsible for ensuring compliance with these limits.
