Emergency equipment
Read the official ruleThis regulation mandates emergency equipment for Part 121 air carrier operations. All required emergency equipment must be regularly inspected per the airline's operations specifications, readily accessible to crew and passengers, clearly marked with operating instructions, and labeled with inspection dates when stored in containers.
Fire extinguishers are required in specific locations:
- Flight deck: at least one
- Galleys (in separate compartments): at least one
- Accessible cargo compartments: at least one
- Passenger cabins: one for 7-30 seats, two for 31-60 seats, and more for larger aircraft, uniformly distributed
At least two extinguishers must contain Halon 1211 or equivalent, with at least one in the passenger cabin.
Aircraft must carry a crash ax (except newer nontransport category planes), and megaphones are required: one for 61-99 passenger seats, two for 100+ seats, positioned for flight attendant access during evacuations.
