US-FAA14 CFR 61.407

What aeronautical knowledge must I have to apply for a flight instructor certificate with a sport pilot rating?

Read the official rule

To apply for a sport pilot flight instructor certificate, you must complete two types of ground training:

Fundamentals of Instruction (FOI): You need ground training covering how to teach—the learning process, effective teaching methods, student evaluation, course development, lesson planning, and classroom techniques. This ensures you understand educational principles before instructing students.

Sport Pilot Aeronautical Knowledge: You must receive ground training on the aeronautical knowledge areas that apply to the specific aircraft category and class you'll be teaching.

Both training sessions must be logged and received from an authorized instructor.

Exception: You can skip the FOI requirement if you already hold any flight or ground instructor certificate, hold a state-issued teaching certificate, or work as a teacher at an accredited college or university. These credentials demonstrate you already understand teaching fundamentals.
