Portable electronic devices

Read the official rule

In plain English

On IFR operations and for air carriers, portable electronic devices are restricted unless the operator has determined the device won’t interfere with navigation or communication systems. For most personal Part 91 VFR flying the PIC makes that call.

Key points

  • PEDs restricted where they could interfere with nav/comm.
  • The operator/PIC determines a device is safe to use.
  • Doesn’t apply to fixed, certified avionics.

Common pitfalls

  • Assuming a phone or tablet never affects sensitive receivers — test for interference.
