METAR & TAF Decoder

Paste any raw METAR or TAF below to decode it into plain English, including the flight category. Everything runs in your browser — nothing is sent anywhere.

How this works

The decoder parses the raw report tokens — wind (direction/speed/gust), visibility, present weather, cloud layers, temperature/dewpoint and altimeter.

Flight category follows the standard US thresholds, using the lowest broken/overcast layer as the ceiling and the prevailing visibility:

  • LIFR: ceiling < 500 ft or visibility < 1 SM
  • IFR: ceiling 500–999 ft or visibility 1–<3 SM
  • MVFR: ceiling 1,000–3,000 ft or visibility 3–5 SM
  • VFR: ceiling > 3,000 ft and visibility > 5 SM
This decoder is for reference and training. Not for navigation or flight planning — always verify against official current sources.
