Short-Field Takeoffs and Landings
Techniques to get the most performance out of a short or obstacle-limited runway.
Short-field technique squeezes the maximum performance out of a runway that is short or has an obstacle on the climb-out or approach. The goal is to use the least distance and clear obstacles safely.
Short-field takeoff
- Use the full length — back-taxi to the very threshold.
- Set flaps per the POH (often a small setting), hold the brakes, apply full power, then release.
- Rotate at the recommended speed and climb at Vx (best angle) until clear of the obstacle, then lower the nose to Vy.
- Retract flaps and gear only after a positive rate and clear of the obstacle.
Short-field landing
- Fly a stabilized approach at the POH short-field speed (no excess speed — every extra knot is float and runway).
- Aim for a precise touchdown point, often the threshold or a near aiming point.
- Touch down at minimum controllable airspeed, promptly retract flaps (weight onto the wheels), and apply maximum braking.
Common pitfalls
- Carrying extra speed "for safety" — it lengthens the landing and invites a float or overrun.
- Forgetting density altitude: a "short field" at high elevation or on a hot day needs much more performance — check the density-altitude tool.
