Thunderstorms and Convective Hazards

How thunderstorms form, the three stages of their life cycle, and the hazards that make them no-go for light aircraft.

A thunderstorm is the most concentrated package of aviation hazards in the sky. It needs three ingredients: moisture, an unstable atmosphere (air that keeps rising once nudged), and a lifting trigger such as a front, terrain or daytime heating.

The life cycle

1. Cumulus stage — strong updrafts build a towering cumulus; no rain reaches the ground yet. 2. Mature stage — the most dangerous: updrafts and downdrafts coexist, rain falls, and you may see hail, lightning, severe turbulence and the gust front. 3. Dissipating stage — downdrafts dominate and the storm rains itself out.

The hazards

  • Severe turbulence that can exceed the structural limits of any aircraft.
  • Wind shear and the gust front, often 15–20+ NM ahead of the storm.
  • Hail, which can be thrown out the top and sides into clear air.
  • Lightning, icing, microbursts and, beneath the base, tornadoes.

Staying clear

Avoid a thunderstorm by at least 20 NM, never fly under one (the microburst/gust-front risk), and never try to climb over a building cell.
